listening to the rain

she sat alone

in the quiet solitude

that is morning

before the sun’s first rays

break through to light the sky

and wake up the land

she listened intently

to the hushed murmur

of the light rain

trying to make out the secrets

she knew it was trying to share

the rain grew seemingly frustrated

with her apparent daftness

as it began to fall at a greater tempo

making music as it fell

on the house and on the trees

hoping that she would catch the melody

it played against the leaves
